AMAZON DIARY

Amazon Diary is the tale of Alex Winters, a sixth grader from Chicago, and his adventures in the Amazon Rainforest.  When the small plane carrying him to his parents crashes in the  jungle he is rescued by a stone-age tribal people known as the Yanomami. The book is made up of Alex's diary entries while living with the Yanomami. Unique in its collage-style use of photography, illustration, and hand-written text, Amazon Diary re-creates the experience of contact with a quickly disappearing culture, from a kid's point of view.

"A few years ago I had the privilege of going into the heart of the Amazon Rainforest, and making contact with a vanishing culture of stone-age people called the Yanomamis. Photographer Mark Greenberg and I traveled by dugout canoe into the jungle with Dr. John Walden, a doctor who has a plan for bringing much-needed medical assistance to the Yanomami people. Mark and I recorded all of our own experiences and used them to create the adventures our character Alex in Amazon Diary." -Author Hudson Talbott
